If you’re working on finding your niche in blogging and growing your audience, it can be helpful to analyze why you follow the people you follow. I’m sure there are blogs you’ve been following for years, so let’s narrow down why it is that they’re maintained a place in your rss reader or Twitter feed. Here’s how to figure out why you enjoy peeking into their lives on a daily basis (that sounds creepy, but you know what I mean!) and use those strengths to help improve your own blog.
Why do you follow the bloggers you follow?
Choose your top ten blogs/tweeters and think about what they post on their blogs, Twitter, Instagram, etc that moves you to comment, save, or share their content. Is it the recipes and DIY projects you want to try? Photography tips and techniques? Outfits or product reviews that give you the shopping bug? Do they share the most interesting links or stories?
What voice to they write in?
The advice-giving expert? The close friend who shares all the details? The butt-kicking coach? The elusive and ever creative artist? The superstar with the sparkling life? The fashion maven sharing their style secrets?
How do you feel after reading their blogs, tweets and seeing their photos?
Are you excited, jealous, inspired, joyful, motivated or calm? Do you feel like they’re your friend even though you’ve never met? (strange, but true!) Do you want to pick their brain? Or step into their shoes for a day?
Personally, I follow bloggers who: write about owning small businesses, share entertaining and uplifting posts, and tweet helpful information on freelance and business. They sound like experts who have accomplished things that I want to do or people who are in the same boat as me. I almost always feel excited, motivated and inspired to work, blog, or push myself in aerial training.
How you can use this information to transform your own blog?
Make a list of the five top types of posts and top five qualities that you love in the bloggers you follow and try to apply those ideals to your content and social media posts. I’m not talking about overhauling your blog to become an amalgamation of your favorites, but tweaking your posting style or the way you share information that gives your readers that same intangible thing that makes you click Follow.
Share the top three reasons you follow your favorite bloggers (and feel free to add their links) in the comments and hopefully this method will help you in accomplishing your blogging goals too!
