How to get great testimonials from your clients

How to get great testimonials from your customers from XO Sarah

Jenna asked,

I was wondering if you have any advice on questions I can ask my clients after the process is done that will help me create “testimonials” from the answers? I have tried to research it a bit but I’m having trouble finding what I’m looking for (every questionnaire advice seems stuffy and outdated and old-man corporate type stuff). I want to avoid things like “this is a great book” and get actual, real feedback that will help others in the future decide to work with me.

Great question Jenna! When you run a creative business it’s extremely important to make feedback from past clients available on your website so potential clients know what it’s like to work with you. Client testimonials are a big part of your marketing machine and will sell your services better than you could yourself.

Any time I finish a project I let the client know that I would love to add their design to my portfolio and ask if they would send a testimonial to include with it. This is probably the most important point – instead of asking for feedback or having them fill out a questionnaire tell them you specifically want a testimonial.

I give my clients guidelines and request 3 to 5 sentences on what it was like working with me, how they felt the site turned out, anything they learned, and what sort of result it’s had on their business. Asking for specific information will make the process as easier on them and you’ll get the exact testimonial you’re looking for.

I’d also recommend adding the client’s name, photo and a link to their site. I have this included in my contract to cut down on emails later.

This is really helpful. Getting feedback is something I have a hard time with – not taking it, but getting people to actually give it to me.
