Today Megan Lyons is here to share how she left her job as a management consultant to start her own business as a health coach!
Tell us about yourself and what you do
Hi! I’m Megan, and I’m a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Health Coach. I can finally say that I get to do what I absolutely love every day … helping others become their happiest, healthiest selves. I empower people to reach their health goals through one-on-one health, wellness, and running coaching, as well as group programs like workshops, teleseminars, group “resets” and healthy eating challenges. I also have a nutrition- and fitness-based blog called The Lyons’ Share Wellness.
How long ago did you make the escape?
Although I had been planning it since mid-2012, I didn’t actually make the escape until January 1, 2014, and then announced it to the world on January 6, 2014. To say that day was exhilarating is an understatement – I was relieved, excited, incredibly nervous to open myself up to judgment, and so much more!
What roadblocks did you face when preparing to leave your job?
The biggest roadblock I faced was absolutely myself. Despite wanting SO badly to do what I knew I could do (helping other people improve their health), it was so far off the “normal” track of what my college classmates and current colleagues could ever imagine. It took a lot of self-coaching to convince myself that it is OK to do what is right for YOU, and to prioritize your own happiness over “fitting the mold.”
How did you know you were ready?
Once I completed my nutrition education, I was technically ready. And once I woke up truly dreading each day, I knew it was 100% time to go. The truth is that I had a great job, but when you are ready to go, you tend to amplify all the bad parts and forget about all the good parts. I became SO focused on how much I disliked the 80-hour weeks and 4 day-per-week travel that I lost sight of how lucky I was in life and how many great things I had going for me. My advice here is: when you know you’re ready, just GO! It doesn’t serve you or anyone around you to stay in a place where you feel unhappy.
What’s the best part about being your own boss?
I am only doing things that I truly WANT to do. Sure, no one likes filing tax paperwork or paying bills, but even when I have “painful” tasks like that, I’m doing them because I want to make MY business successful. There’s a sense of pride and ownership in your work that can’t be beat!
What challenges have come up?
There are so many challenges! The biggest for me is patience – I have so many dreams for my business, and want to help so many people at once, but I can’t expect them all to be knocking at my door ready to change their lives for the better. Owning your own business sure is hard work, but it’s rewarding and fun at the same time!
What are your work days like now?
Every day is a bit different, which I like. I usually wake up around 6:30am, post my blog post and spend some time reading others’ blogs. I like to run or work out in the morning if I don’t have early morning appointments, and then I start tackling the day’s to-do list.
I love organization, and have a complete plan laid out for each week: I choose 1 “big” task, 3 “medium” tasks, and 5 “small” tasks for each day, and I make those my goals. Most of the day is spent on a combination of marketing efforts, preparing for client conversations, working on the blog, attending webinars or classes for continuing nutrition education, and of course, my favorite – working with one-on-one clients or giving group presentations!
Right now, I’m still in the overzealous-entrepreneur phase, and I end up working until 10pm or so, but I’m working on making sure I incorporate personal breaks and boundaries so that I continue to have as much energy as I have now! Truly, one of the best things is SLEEP – I used to get by on 4-5 hours per night while balancing my demanding job, blog, and exercise routine, and now I sleep 7 hours almost every night!
Any advice for those working to make the escape as well?
I can’t encourage you enough to follow your dreams. If not now, when? One of my very favorite quotes is from Henry David Thoreau: “Go forth in the direction of your dreams; live the life you have imagined.” It’s up to YOU to create the life you want, so get started now!
