Today I want to share an interview with another one of my Dare to Grow students, Kayleigh Hannon from Let’s Talk Lady Biz. Kayleigh joined Dare to Grow two years ago (back when it was called Badass Babes) and used the lessons and the community to get focused and create growth in her blog and her online business.
Tell us about your blog / business
My business has transformed SO much in the past year. I provide virtual assistant services and social media + content management services to bad ass women entrepreneurs. Before taking the course, I was honestly really confused about how I would turn my blog into a business and how to (actually) make money from it. I wanted to provide business tips to entrepreneurs – which now I laugh at how vague that was on the type of content I wanted to create and the people I wanted to work with. Now, I’m super clear on my strengths and business.
What were your stats before starting the course?
I didn’t even pay attention to stats or Google Analytics before starting Sarah’s course. Which was probably why I had a whopping one (yep, you read that right!) email subscriber when I joined and my social media presence was non-existent. I really lacked consistency on posting content and always struggled to come up with content for my blog. I was the girl who posted like every three weeks because I didn’t have a blog strategy in place and never knew what to write about.
What was your goal in taking the course?
I really wanted to create a strategy for my blog and figure out how to make it profitable. I wanted to launch services and courses and had no idea how to incorporate my blog into that plan. My lack of consistency really stopped me from growing my blog. After all, no one is going to keep coming back to your blog when you aren’t posting any new content! I also wanted to get clear on my blogging goals. Since I didn’t have any goals or a strategy in place, I never knew what to post about because I had no idea what my audience wanted.
What was the most important change you made?
I made a few BIG changes. I finally got consistent in my blogging and social media! Sarah gave me a kick in the butt and the live hangouts helped to keep me accountable in accomplishing my goals. No one wants to show up to the chat and say they haven’t accomplished anything in the last week!
I also created a strategy for both my blog and social media which makes it easier to create content. I knew my goals and figured out how I could accomplish them by strategically creating content.
This was the first time I created an editorial calendar and planned all my content out in advance. Clearly writing my blog posts a couple hours before they were supposed to be published was NOT working. The course helped me come up with months of content and helped me plan well in advance. Sarah also gave individual website reviews and I was able to structure my website around converting new readers into email subscribers and keeping people on my site.
How has your blog/social media/email list grown since taking the course?
Back when I had one subscriber, I never thought people would read or engage with my content. Now, I get new email subscribers every day! My blog and social media completely play a role in this. Sarah helped me to understand how my blog and social media can be used to increase traffic and work together. She also helped me realize that it’s not totally terrifying to reach out to other blog + biz owners! After reaching out and guest posting on other people’s blogs, I started to be seen as an expert in my industry which completely impacted the amount of clients I landed.
What’s on your blogging to-do list for 2017?
I want to always have at least three months of content planned in advance. With my blogging content created, even if it’s general outlines, I’m able to plan all other aspects of my business – emails, social media, launches, you name it! That means posting every single week and staying consistent. I’d also like to guest post more often to expand my reach.
Anything else you’d like to share?
This course was the first ever investment I made in my business and I can’t imagine where I’d be if I hadn’t stepped up and made the investment. Sarah knows her stuff – and it shows! It was more than being told what I should do, but how I could bring it to life. The community has been super helpful whenever I’ve been stuck in my business or just need to get feedback on ideas. I would recommend this course to anyone who is ready to step up and reach their full potential in 2017!
