This post was originally sent to my email list, but I loved the response so I’m sharing it here too!
Last week (as I absentmindedly opened Instagram when I should have been working) I received a message that gave me a BIG reminder. Something that is so easy to forget as we become submerged in the work. Something SO important for making your blog or business thrive. Something I really needed to remember myself.
The message was simple – I loved your recent email. It reminds me a lot of myself. I appreciate your work and what you’re doing.
But it made me pause for a moment and remember that whether they like, comment, send a message, respond to emails, or not, PEOPLE ARE PAYING ATTENTION.
Almost everything we share is out there online for anyone to see. But the majority of people keeping an eye on you will NEVER respond.
I send emails to over 20k people every week and only a handful of people who read those emails write me back. Plus, many of those emails are automated so I’m not even thinking about how many people I’m reaching out to every week.
Which makes it really easy to minimize the impact we’re having to the number of likes on a photo or the number of students in a course. And if your audience is just starting to grow, those numbers might make you feel like you’re not doing much at all.
Feeling like we have a purpose and are making an impact are SO important in staying in the game and doing the work. I know from experience that when those to things fall by the wayside, my excitement and motivation slows down too.
Yep – after 6 years growing my business online I still have those Does anybody even care about this?? moments too.
So I want you to do two things for me today . . .
1 | Take a few minutes to look at the faces of all the people following you on Instagram, the number of people who visited your site, the number of people who opened your last email and take a moment to imagine the impact of what you’ve shared. Imagine it making someone’s day, encouraging them to move forward, solving a problem, making them laugh or cry or get pissed and take action. Imagine every single one of those people getting something from what you post and excitedly waiting to hear from you again.
2 | Head over to the blog / Facebook / Instagram / recent email of someone who has had an impact on YOU and send them a note to say thank you, or I look forward to your emails every week, or your videos always make me laugh. Just a quick reminder to say – I’m paying attention, I appreciate what you’re doing, keep being RAD!
The internet gives us so many opportunities to support + connect with each other. While it may not always be apparent in the response or engagement, I assure you, if you’re creating content online, you absolutely are impacting someone, somewhere!
